Huron, Ohio: A Charming Lakeside Community

With a quaint business district, memorable dining and sandy beaches, Huron, Ohio is one of my favorite stops along Ohio's north coast. This charming community is located an hour west of Cleveland and an hour east of Toledo and sits only two blocks from Lake Erie's coastline. Huron is ideal for a quiet and relaxing weekend away, or perfect paired with a trip to Sandusky's Cedar Point amusement park. Here are some of my personal recommendations:

Where to Stay: Lodging options in and around Huron will suit any taste. Enjoy a resort-style stay at Sawmill Creek Resort, which has it's own golf course and boat dock. Another local option is Captain Montague’s Bed and Breakfast. Or for the outdoors lovers, stay at one of the many local cottages and beach resorts -- such as Firefly Beach or Wild Waves Motel. Book in advance, or during the off-season, at any of these locations for the best deal.

What to Do: Be sure to stroll through the downtown Huron business district during your visit. After a walk, consider a trip to see the Huron Harbor Lighthouse. Visitors cannot enter the lighthouse but can walk along the pier to snap photos and take in the beauty of Lake Erie. Another nearby option for nature lovers is Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve. This nature preserve offers walking, hiking trails and a nature center for children and adults alike.

For a day in the sun, visit Nickel Plate Beach. A modest fee is charged for parking, but the sandy beach and views here will make you forget you're in Ohio. Outdoor beach yoga classes are available in Huron during the summer too. A public boat launch by the Huron River also helps solidify the area as boater and fisherman's paradise.

Where to Eat: Two local favorites are Berardi's Restuarant and Marconi's Italian Restaurant. At Berardi's family dining is central, with a casual atmosphere. For a more upscale evening, try Marconi's which offers dining with an Italian flair. For dessert, the Pied Piper ice cream stand (open during the summer) is a local favorite.

Nightlife: In the summer, consider attending a life performance at the Huron Playhouse. Live entertainment can also often be found most weekends on the stage by the Huron Boat Basin. For more live music and sometimes a live DJ, stop by i-5’s Bar and Grill. This laid-back bar has a variety of tropical and traditional drinks fit to please any palate. Or, consider a short jaunt outside of the Huron city limits to Berlin Heights, Ohio and the Quarry Hill Winery for a taste of wine and live entertainment.
